What is Zip Line?
This extreme adventure sport is also known as canopy, or in Spanish as tirolesa or tirolina. It consists of being suspended in the air and sliding through a cable hanging by a pulley and a safety harness, whose displacement is produced by the own weight and gravity of the person who practices it.
Structure of a zip line
The anchorages are one of the most important elements when building a zip line, since all the pressure and tension is supported by these pieces. Their homologation goes through a very strict process, since if very rigorous guidelines are not followed, the athletes could expose themselves to a situation of extreme danger. In a natural landscape, the tree is the element in which this anchorage is usually made, although this is recommended when the zip line is not going to withstand much tension. On the other hand, the most advisable way to guarantee safety is by means of anchorages created specifically for this sport, especially the cemented anchorages.
The zip line cable is the means by which the activity is performed, so it has to go through a series of rigorous safety measures. The engineering discipline is necessary to manufacture this element, taking into account the material with which it is created and the diameter of the cable itself.
Types of zip line
There are different types of zip line, depending on the position of the body and the braking system. The most common type of zip line is the descending zip line, in which the body must have a vertical position and the ability to brake thanks to the feet and hands that are free. The ascending zip line differs from the previous one in that it does not have a braking system and the body must be as horizontal as possible for the comfort of the movement.
Correct technique for practicing zip-lining
As in any adventure sport, safety is the most important factor to take into account. Ziplining is a highly demanded activity by the most adventurous, but it must be practiced in such a way that it does not endanger the physical safety of the athletes.
Apart from the rules imposed for its construction, both professionals and athletes have to comply with a series of safety measures and rules for the correct sliding down the cable. Before practicing Zip Line, a brief training class on the activity must be given, which will cover topics such as possible accidents, minimum physical aspects of athletes to perform the activity, safety equipment, restrictions, approved material of the zip line…
If you are not an expert in this discipline, you should always do the activity with a company specialized in zip line, where they will teach you the basic instructions for a safe zip line tour.
